I was given a copy of your Homeowner’s Guide to Wildfire Prevention. I wish I could afford to give one to each of the 5,000 property owners in our hillside communities for the holidays.

The Homeowner’s Guide to Wildfire Prevention is an invaluable tool for homeowners living in any wildland-urban interface area. It includes simple-to-follow tips on reducing a home’s risk of fire, and explanations of why these steps are important. Sources of ignition, defensible space, buffer zones, the dangers of embers: all these are explained in an interesting way to help every affected homeowner want to get started on improving his home’s fire resistance.

This 68-page book, illustrated with many photographs, is a quick read, and it’s filled with useful information. Every homeowner should have The Homeowner’s Guide to Wildfire Prevention on his or her shelf for easy reference. The book is organized by tips one through six starting at the home and then moving out and away from the house.

Some tips seem obvious such as “Don’t smoke in bed particularly if you have been drinking,” but every year people are killed in house fires for that very reason. Other valuable tips are less common. For example, who would think that having irrigation water hit a fence increases fire hazard? Dr. Sieben explains that irrigation water on wood will lead to dry rot. The six tips are complemented with appendices that include a month-by-month treatment program, advice on how to make yourself, your family and home firesafe as well as ready for emergencies, information about dealing with potentially problematic plants, and maximizing the usefulness of vegetation management dumpsters.

This book provides important steps you can take to protect your property as well as to keep your family safe any time of the year. So do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book and, while you’re at it, buy one for a friend or neighbor.
